Elegant Black Oak and Navy Bathroom
The Brief
Our long-standing clients approached us to transform their existing bathroom, which was located in a cramped, poorly laid-out box room with a sloped ceiling. They envisioned a luxurious wet room featuring a walk-in shower, complemented by a separate freestanding bath. Alongside these core elements, they sought ample storage and practical features - without compromising on elegance and sophistication.
They were also keen to maintain the design principles already applied to their kitchen and orangery, particularly incorporating Crittall-style elements and a similar colour palette. This would help create a cohesive aesthetic throughout the home, allowing the new bathroom to blend seamlessly with the rest of the interior.
The Design
The first step in this transformation was understanding the space and the possibilities it offered as the original bathroom was impractical for the clients' needs. After assessing the space, we saw an opportunity to relocate the bathroom to a larger, more functional room at the back of the house. This would allow us to increase the overall size and improve the flow of the room.
Once settled on the new layout, the focus shifted to creating a larger, more open walk-in shower. To achieve this, we removed an existing chimney stack, which allowed us to significantly open up the space and provided the flexibility to craft a luxurious shower area that created a spacious feel the clients loved.
The shower quickly became the centrepiece of the design, with a bespoke shower screen extending all the way to the ceiling. The Crittall-style finish was printed in a rich, deep blue, which not only complemented the overall colour scheme of the bathroom but echoed the colours flowing throughout the rest of their home.
The Finished Space
The shower was constructed using a wet room tray, with meticulous attention paid to the tiling for a flawless, high-end finish. Each tile was carefully laid with a precise slope towards the waste, creating a seamless and polished appearance.
To introduce subtle visual interest without overwhelming the space, we incorporated textured tiles within the shower alcove - an elegant detail that also serves a practical purpose by keeping shower products within easy reach. The clients were especially delighted with the result, with our client describing the tiling as "the best he’s ever seen."
For added comfort and accessibility, we installed a Corian shower seat, while the towel radiator was thoughtfully positioned to the right of the basin, allowing convenient access from both the shower and the entryway.
The south-facing windows ensured the room received plenty of natural light, allowing us to use deeper tones without making the space feel heavy. A freestanding bath was placed beneath the window, offering a serene spot to relax while enjoying views of the garden. The bath was carefully positioned, with the tap cleverly installed behind the tub at an angle for a streamlined, custom look.
Black timber-textured furniture was chosen for both the tall storage cabinet, used for toiletries, and the basin furniture. For the basin, we selected a compact yet functional design that maximised available space. It was positioned to provide generous storage beneath, giving the clients more room for everyday essentials. Above, a mirror includes an illuminated magnifier, adding a touch of luxury while ensuring convenience for daily use.
Instead of tiles, a Corian upstand was used to maintain the sleek aesthetic established by the shower seat and window cill. The soft grey walls and grey tiles worked in harmony with the darker elements, balancing the design and creating an inviting, cohesive space.
