The Brief

With a love for contemporary design, our clients sought a bespoke fitted wardrobe that would not only address their storage needs but also enhance the room and navigate the unique challenges of the space.

Structural wooden beams crisscross the master bedroom in our client's converted barn – a beautiful feature of the building on one hand, and a challenge to overcome on the other.

The Design

To develop a solution, our designer, Richard Keyes, considered the bedroom as a whole, beginning with the doorway. The original door swung inwards, restricting access to an area that was to become part of the wardrobe solution.  Replacing the door with a sliding option significantly improved accessibility and allowed the wardrobes to extend along the entire length of the bedroom.

The steeply sloping ceiling in the proposed wardrobe area also required careful consideration. We didn’t want to compromise on shelf space in the upper sections of the wardrobe, so multiple structural bulkheads were designed to ensure the wardrobe system could sit far enough away.

One bulkhead was concealed behind the top wooden beam, another was placed on the main structural wall of the house, and a third was positioned between the two halves of the room. These bulkheads provided ideal anchor points for the sleek Rimadesio Cover system, allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into the room’s architecture.

The Rimadesio Cover system is highly adaptable and ideal for bespoke, contemporary storage solutions like this. The uprights are fixed to the ceiling and floor, creating a solid framework that removes the need for additional wall fixings, preserving the original brickwork.

From the upright frame, all components – including shelves, hanging rails, and glass doors – are mounted. Each element of the Cover system is immaculately finished, from the ‘lead-grey’ frame and ‘smoke-grey’ glass to the vegan-leather-wrapped hanging rails and ‘carbonised larch’ drawer cabinets.

This bedroom is unique in that the back of the wardrobe is a feature you want to showcase. The building’s materials and structure, illuminated by a hidden internal LED lighting system, create a striking backdrop and prevent the wardrobe from closing in the room.

Due to limited natural light from the small bedroom windows, reflective smoked grey glass was selected for the large floor-to-ceiling doors. When closed, these doors brighten the space by reflecting light, improving the overall illumination of the room.

Speaking about the project, Head of Design Richard Keyes commented: “Creating such an outstanding and unique space that works effortlessly for our clients is incredibly satisfying. They are so pleased with the result.

It just goes to show how well contemporary design can complement a period property when it's thoughtfully planned and precisely installed.”
